Small Town Boy Who Grew Up to Be a Leader with an Eye to the Future

 

I grew up in a small country township in New England and was driven at an early age toward the future and how it could be made better. I sensed that there was something larger than life out there in the world than in that small town. The spark may have been set by my father who pointed out a low orbiting satellite to me traveling along the darkened twilight skies when I was a very young boy. The fascination started out with aircraft – maybe the influence, once again, of my father who was a WW2 Naval Aviator. I wanted to become an astronaut and focused my energies to get into the US Naval Academy to eventually become a pilot since so many in the early astronaut corps came from the Academy.

 

Hitting the Horizon…

 

Well, long story made short…I didn’t become an astronaut but one could say that I aimed for the moon and hit the horizon. Hitting the horizon for me was getting into and graduating from the US Naval Academy with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, becoming a Naval Aviator, and later becoming a Naval Reserve Acquisition Professional helping to field the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet. Heck, I was even a polar qualified aircraft commander flying on the Antarctic Continent with this country’s Operation Deep Freeze.

 

Extensive Experience & Skills

 

In my civilian career, I became an engineer developing and operating this country’s overhead satellite intelligence collection assets as well as developing, integrating and fielding systems for ships, aircraft and ground systems supporting satellite collection systems. That career spanned engineering, program management, and, new business development with large defense contractors such as General Electric, Lockheed Martin Corp., and BAE Systems. Along the way, I became very conversant in hundreds of aerospace and IT technologies that needed to be studied, understood, selected, and integrated into the various system-of-systems programs.

 

I was intrigued and curious while looking for solutions to many challenging problems. Doing so, I became an expert in understanding and communicating highly complex technologies into simple layman’s terms when selecting and selling various technological solutions to the various strategic stakeholders and decision makers.

 

 

The “Go To” Kind of Guy Who Could Speak the Language

 

Company leadership always had a hard time finding those “Go To” folks who could bridge the gap between the engineer and the marketing professionals. I ended up writing many white papers and became the “Go To” guy for leading many proposals and technical offerings to companies and to government agencies.

 

On Becoming Persuasive & Compelling

 

It wasn’t selling technical features by themselves; rather, it was selling the solution benefits and value propositions coupled with “the proof” to bolster credibility. In every instance, whether it was a hydraulic actuator for a F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet landing gear system or a new parallel processing CPU for a high-end digital image processing system, I knew how to discern the most important features, explain their benefits, and tie them to the most important core buying emotions of the target prospects. I did that by writing persuasive and compelling proposals that were clear, concise and engaging.
